I tried this and it gave me two errors (same with either # or $):
QUOTE:
$cp /sdcard/debian/ /system/bin
cp: omitting directory '/sdcard/debian'
$chmod 4777 /system/bin/bootdeb
Unable to chamod /system/bin/bootdeb: No such file or directory

The commands I must use to boot debian remain:
QUOTE:
$cd sdcard/debian
$su
#modprobe ext2 (this must be done each time I start Terminal Emulator following a clean exit)
#sh bootdeb

Everything works great from there.

note: if it helps, during busybox install instead of the line './busybox --install.' I had to use './busybox --install'

Will this work on a G1 DEV phone?

The method as it stands does not seem to work on the developer phone - it requires filesystem kernel modules that do not exist on the developer phone but are there on the JF 1.3 firmware. Um, don't try to install the JF firmware on a developer phone, it will brick it.

ah sorry the first command should be cp /sdcard/debian/bootdeb /system/bin
let me know if that works for you!

Ok, different errors this time. :/
QUOTE:
$cp /sdcard/debian/bootdeb /system/bin
cd.....Permission denied
$su
#cp /sdcard/debian/bootdeb /system/bin
(pause)
#bootdeb
bootdeb: permission denied
#sh bootdeb
sh Can't open bootdeb

The same steps I used before still work (cd...debian, su, modpr..,sh bootdeb)

On a side note, I'm doing all this through 'Terminal Emulator' on the G1. Should I be using some other app? Also, a 'ls' of root shows only 'sbin' no 'bin' is this a problem?
