I don't know if anyone else has tried this but I just installed jesusfreke's cupcake update my phone is rooted and when I try to run the chmod 4577 * command I get unable to chmod bootdeb operation not permitted. I have root access the $ changed to a # and it asked me if I wanted to allow root access. I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to Linux but I do know a little bit.

ok, I'm confused.

On the Android-DevPhone-Updating Google Group, one of the Google team said

In 1.5, su is restricted to only be accessible through an adb shell,
not from regular apps.

So, if that's the case, what are people doing with 1.5? Further complicating the issue for me is the adb doesn't seem to work. I can, at least, mount my G1 to my laptop (which I couldn't do until just a few minutes ago post-upgrade). It seems this thread was started well before 1.5 came out though, so I want to make sure this is going to work and not ef up my phone before I get going with it.

Thanks!

JF 1.5 and Haykuro's 1.5 both have root, and not just from ADB. I recommend running one of those builds.

ok, but the instructions say

QUOTE:

4. Use Terminal (you can download it from Android market direct from your device) to go to the newly formed /sdcard/debian folder.

cd /sdcard/debian

UPDATED! 5. As root make the files executable by typing:

su (hit return)
chmod 4755 *

I cannot su on my dev phone. The point I was making on my last post was that it looks like these instructions do not work for 1.5 since 1.5 won't allow you to su and the instructions tell you to su.

Am I missing something?

I don't know what you're missing. JesusFreke's version of 1.5 and Haykuro's version of 1.5 both have root. According to you, the official ADP1.5 has root, but only from ADB. So it sounds to me like you have three options: flash JF1.5, flash 1.5H, or use ADB.
